Freelance Writer/Editor

Highlights include writing dozens of articles for the National Restaurant Association and reporting on science and engineering research at the University of Maryland (see next entry).

University of Maryland

University of Maryland logo Reported on science and engineering research and educational programs at the University of Maryland. Worked as senior writer for the alumni publications of the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences and its predecessor the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Physical Sciences. Wrote feature and news articles for the alumni magazine of the University of Maryland Clark School of Engineering. Interviewed faculty members, alumni, and students about their research and innovations in engineering, physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology, geology, astronomy, computer science, and other sciences, translating complex, technical material for a lay audience.

BabagaNewz Magazine

BabagaNewz logo Wrote, substantially edited, copy edited, and proofread articles for a national children's magazine. Collaborated with the editorial staff and the editorial board to develop creative ideas for educational articles. Worked closely with freelance writers, assigning them articles and guiding them through rewrites and edits. Wrote and reviewed content for the magazine's website. Copy edited and proofread a teacher's guide that accompanied each issue of the monthly magazine.

National Restaurant Association 

National Restaurant Association logo Served as associate editor of Restaurants USA, the magazine of the National Restaurant Association. Wrote articles for, copy edited, and proofread Restaurants USA. Served as editor of Bread & Butter: The Bottom Line on Running Restaurants, an award-winning newsletter focused on professional development for restaurant managers, and editor of Fork in the Road: Follow This Path to a Successful Restaurant Career, an award-winning newspaper for high school students. As editor of Bread & Butter and Fork in the Road, established the editorial calendar; assigned, edited, and wrote articles; created the production schedule; guided the designer in producing appropriate artwork and layouts; oversaw corrections; reviewed the blueline; and oversaw the budget.

American Society for Engineering Education

ASEE logoResearched, wrote, and edited feature articles for the award-winning magazine of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). Collaborated with the editor to select editorial content and determine the magazine's focus. Served as editor of several regular columns and departments, assigning article topics to in-house or freelance writers. Oversaw the correction process of the final page proofs and bluelines. Managed the editorial process for several other ASEE publications, including membership brochures and conference programs. Served on ASEE's Web Site Redesign Committee.
